To the Parents of English 6 and Grammar 7 students in Room L16:
Wow, this semester has been busy!
For the last month or so, your students and I have been working on a songwriting unit. The 6th graders began with a short history of the blues, before diving into song structure and learning about terms like dualism, colloquialisms, figurative language (e.g., simile and metaphor), and rhymes. The 7th graders have been working on folk music, beginning with the Greenwich Village movement in the 1960s, and have covered conventions like personal storytelling and character development in lyrics, political allusion, and a review of terms like figurative language, dualism, and irony. All students have displayed a remarkable aptitude and willingness to experiment with a form of writing that is rarely taught at the middle school level. Although I have only been with this group of students for the last month, I am constantly amazed by their work and positive attitude, and I’m looking forward to exploring other topics related to English with them this semester.
As many of you will learn this week, I will now be teaching full-time. This was a position that I didn’t expect to be in this year. However, I am confident that all students in L16 will have a fun, interesting, and writing-filled semester.
Not much will be changing in the classroom. I will be providing students with ample class time to complete all relevant assignments. If they use class time wisely, they should only have between 30-60 minutes of homework (reading and grammar practice) per week.
